1. The Society
1.1. What is the ANU Anime Society?
The ANU Anime Society is a group of (mostly) ANU students brought together by their love of Japanese animation (or anime - pronounced aa-knee-may for those unsure) in its pure or undubbed form. For a small yearly contribution, members of the society are treated to weekly screenings of the latest fansubbed anime (as well as some all time classics!).
1.2 What's the history of the society?
One hundred and forty years ago, near the end of the Edo dynasty, the samurai known as the Hitokiri Battousai went to Kyoto. The Battousai turned the tide for the people of Japan, leading them into the new Meiji era. But, near the end of the conflict, he vanished... No one saw or heard from him again. The Hitokiri Battousai became a legend to the people of Japan. It was around that time that Matt Burke and Sam Wilson set up a table at market day and started selling memberships to "The ANU Otaku Council: The Asian Film Society". After the first year of running (1998), it was clear that the majority of members were most interested in anime, so the focus shifted, but the name stayed the same. In 2000 the society was re-registered as the ANU Anime Society.
1.3 How do I join?
Come along to any screening, put your name down, and pay the membership fee (see the club info page for pricing), it's that easy! You'll even get a snazzy card, which entitles you to... walk into any one of our screenings.
1.4 Do I have to be an ANU student to join?
Nope. Like most ANUSA (Student Association) affiliated clubs, we need a certain number of members to be students, but we easily have enough every year, so this is not a concern.
2. Screenings
2.1 When/where are screenings held?
All will be revealed upon consulting with the great screenings page.
2.2 What is the policy on [MA,R,X] rated material and copyrighted material?
The policy runs along these lines:
- No showing MA15+ without warning both at the meeting and in the schedule.
- R shown only on weekends at special screenings (we have only had one such screening so far)
- No X. Ever. (ie. uncut Urotsukidoji which has been officially banned in Australia as unclassifiable)
- Nothing which has been lisenced in Australia (ie. no Macross, Ranma OAV 1-6, first season Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, EVA etc.) unless our version is significantly different (not just dub vs. sub) eg. The death episodes of Sailor Moon which were almost completely rewritten for US TV.
2.3 Can we show [your_favorite_show]?
Everyone has their own favorite show(s), but unfortunately we can't show them all in the limited time each week. If you want something shown at the weekly screenings, you can try lobbying people in the executive when a series is about to end (new shows are normally decided at least 4 weeks in advance). If you want to show a one-off show such as a movie or OAV, then you can try to get it shown at a Saturday screening. If you want to show some people how great a certain show is, you can show something after the regular screening if you can convince people to stick around :).
2.4 What the hell is [show] about?
There are some good reviews in the series section. If your questions are not answered there, try looking at some pages devoted to the show. I suggest anipike as a good place to start. If you still don't get a straight answer on your point of befuddlement, ask the mailing list.
2.5 Is this legal?
In a word, mostly. The videos we show are either "fansubs" which are videos imported from Japan and subtitled by fans for fans, or have been personally imported from America or Japan by members of the society. FBI warnings do NOT apply in Australia UNLESS the copyright for the show has been purchased in Australia (or until the FBI get jurisdiction here!). The same goes for fansubs - generally the copyright has not been purchased yet on the latest shows, so showing, viewing, and copying the tapes is legal as long as it is conducted in a not-for-profit manner.
3. The Mailing List
3.1 What's the mailing list for?
The list is to allow group members to discuss their favorite shows, share news on anime-related events, and keep informed of the latest happenings in the mysterious mafia that is the executive.
3.2 What are the rules for posting to the list?
There are no official rules (yet), but if you could follow these few guidelines, it will be much appreciated by all.
- Please delete unneccessary quoted text! This is ok for a simple back-and-forth email between you and a friend, but when everyone has to read it, it becomes most frustrating. It's particularly annoying if you receive a "Daily Digest" and most of it is the same message with varying numbers of >s.
- Please minimise use of profanity. Personally, you'd be doing very well if you could write anything that offended me, but that doesn't mean that everyone on the list feels the same way, be considerate!
- Try to avoid sending one-line messages. If it's a particularly profound single line, then it's probably ok, but replying with "yes." is not a lot of use.
- Try to avoid personal communication. Each of us have our own email address, if you want to tell one person something, then tell just that person :)
3.3 Can anyone join?
Yes. The mailing list is open to all members of the society, and non-members I guess (although why you'd want to listen to our confabulations if you aren't a member is beyond me).
3.4 Sounds interesting, how do I join?
Simple! put your email address into the box on the main page and hit the pretty little "Join" button.
3.5 Screw you guys, how do I unsubscribe?
To unsubscribe from the list, send an email to: anu_anime-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
4. The Web Page
4.1 I want to write a review of [some_show], could you put it up?
Yes! I'm always happy to get more content for this page, looks like I've done more work that way.
Alternatively, you can create an account and write something about the show instead.
4.2 How did you write such a cool page?
Hand worked HTML made by our finest craftsmen. Actually, it's plain html written in VIM and notepad (depending where I am at the time).
4.3 You're full of it, no one asks you questions
True, but I wouldn't mind if people did.
